Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone says that the Champions League experience of Fernando Torres will be extremely crucial for the club when they take on Rostov in the group D match.

The Spaniard has managed to win a whole host of trophies at club and international level. He has been the winner of the World Cup and European championships with the Spanish national team, while he won the Champions League with Chelsea back in 2012. Torres was recently left out of the 4-2 win over Malaga during the weekend. However, Simeone has confirmed that the striker is set to return to the starting line-up for the game against Rostov.

Since his return to the Vicente Calderon in 2015, Torres has been able to slightly rediscover his form that made him one of the greatest strikers in the world. Even though he has not scored since the 5-0 win over Sporting Gijon back in September, Simeone seems to still trust in the forward.

After all, Torres came up with the assist that ensured a 1-0 win against the Russian opponents earlier in the season. One of the few positives for Atletico Madrid this campaign has been their form in the Champions League, as they have managed to win all four games so far.

“He is one of the few players in our group who has won this competition. He will start. We need to come out with intensity in order to take the game where we want it to be.Rostov ensured that we had few opportunities in our last game against them and that means we will have to apply ourselves,” said Simeone. Torres has managed only two goals in the league and is yet to open his account in the Champions League even after 272 minutes of action.
