BENFICA STAR ON LIVERPOOL RADAR

Liverpool manager JurgenKlopp will have to look for solutions to cope with the potential absence of his African stars for around a month due to the AFCON (African Cup of Nations) tournament. Klopp is almost resigned to losing star players Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah to the AFCON tournament alongside Naby Keita and the German will have to act fast to ensure that their absence does not derail his team’s title challenge. It has been reported that Klopp and Liverpool will have to splash the cash on one or two attackers to cushion the loss of Salah and Mane to AFCON and a lot of attacking talents have been linked with the Merseyside giants including Benfica star Darwin Nunez who has drawn similarities with former Liverpool strikers Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres.

Benfica striker Nunez is seen as the heir to Atletico Madrid star Suarez in the Uruguayan national team. Suarez was a Liverpool player for over two years on the back of his transfer from Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam. The Reds signed Suarez after the sale of Fernando Torres. Uruguayan national team talisman Luis Suarez was the direct replacement for Fernando Torres when he left the club to sign for rivals Chelsea controversially in January 2012.

Nunez has been in very good form for Benfica this season. Apart from him, other attacking talents such as Wolverhampton Wanderers player AdamaTraore, FC Porto star Luis Diaz and many more have been linked with a move to Anfield during the January transfer window.

On the long-term, Nunez could be the man to replace 30-year-old Roberto Firmino who has seen limited playing time this season due to injury. He has eight goals and two assists in ten league games for Benfica this season. The 22-year-old is presently valued at £43m and he has three goals in five Champions League games.

CHELSEA: HOW TAMMY BROKE THE CURSE

The number nine curse at Chelsea existed since the big money signing of Fernando Torres from Premier League rivals Liverpool many years ago. The Blues secured the transfer of Fernando Torres from Liverpool for £50m in January 2011 but the Spaniard didn’t meet the expectations of the Chelsea fans at Stamford Bridge.

Fernando Torres was one of the best strikers in world football when Chelsea snapped him up from the Reds but he was unable to produce his Liverpool form at Chelsea. Torres was able to win the elusive Champions League title before leaving Chelsea though he was not a regular in the starting XI when the feat happened under Roberto Di Matteo.

Since Torres left Chelsea, the likes of fellow strikers Gonzalo Higuain and Radamel Falcao have worn the number nine jersey with little or no success. England international Tammy Abraham was able to break the number nine jersey curse after he showed his quality when he was drafted into the first team by former manager Frank Lampard on the back of his successful loan spell at Aston Villa.

Abraham was promoted to the first team in the summer of 2019 following his return from Villa. He went on to emerge as the team’s highest goalscorer in each of the last two seasons.

In his first season with the Chelsea first team, Tammy Abraham scored 18 goals and eight assists in 47 games. The England player was involved in a total of 2960 minutes during his debut season as a Chelsea regular.

Abraham netted 12 goals in his second season as a Chelsea starter plus six assists. The attacker was a regular in the Chelsea team until the arrival of current manager Thomas Tuchelat the start of this year. He played for a total of just 1533 minutes.

EURO 2020: SPAIN SURVIVE CROATIA SCARE

Spain are one of the two most successful teams in the history of the European Championship alongside Germany having won the tournament three times each. The two teams can add a fourth tile at the ongoing Euro 2020 tournament.

Germany are in action against old foes England in a round of 16 encounter billed for the Wembley Stadium on Tuesday to determine who will go through to the quarterfinals as they bid to a fourth title, while Spain are already in the quarterfinals in the quest for a fourth title after they survived the scare from Croatia.

Spain trailed to a bizarre own goal from Barcelona starlet Pedri in the first half after goalkeeper Unai Simon failed to deal with his back pass before Paris Saint Germain (PSG) attacker Pablo Sarabia dragged the Spaniards level to ensure that the two teams went into the half-time interval with a 1-1 draw.

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicuetagave Spain the lead for the first time in the game via a header in the second half before Ferran Torres added a third goal for the Spaniards. At the point of the goal from Manchester City star Torres on 77 minutes, Spain were cruising and could have scored more to extinguish any fightback from the Croatians. Croatia then showed immense fighting spirit to score two goals in the final five minutes to take the game into extra time.

The Croatians pulled one back through Dinamo Zagreb attacker MislavOrsicwith five minutes left on the clock having come off the bench before he provided the cross for another substitute in Atalanta midfielder Mario Pasalic to head in the equaliser two minutes into added time to force an extra 30 minutes to determine who goes through. In the end, Alvaro Morata and substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scored within three minutes in first half of extra time to send Spain to the quarterfinals.

The current set of Spain players would be hoping to emulate Fernando Torres and the other members of the 2008 class who ended the country’s wait for a major trophy. Fernando Torres scored the lone goal in the final as Spain beat Germany 1-0 to win Euro 2008. The goal from Fernando Torres ended a 44-year wait for a major trophy. Spain then retained their title four years later at Euro 2012 to take them to three titles with the Germans.
