Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has revealed the two reasons he usually pick Luis Suarez ahead of Fernando Torres when confronted with the better striker question. In a chat with Sky Sports last month, the Liverpool legend gave his reasons for going with Suarez rather than Torres as he pointed out that he has been asked the same question on several occasions.
For his first reason, Gerrard said Luis Suarez was at the top of his game for a longer time than Fernando Torres before he added his second reason which is because the Uruguayan left Liverpool for a foreign club unlike Spanish player Torres who left Liverpool to join rivals Chelsea in a £50m deal, a record transfer for the West London giants.
A lot of Liverpool fans including Villa boss Gerrard were disappointed with Torres when he moved to Chelsea in January 2011 after spending three-and-a-half years at Anfield. He moved to Chelsea during the time that the Blues were huge rivals of Liverpool dating back to 2004 when Jose Mourinho was the Chelsea manager and Rafael Benitez was the Liverpool manager. On his part, Suarez also spent three-and-a-half years at Anfield before he left the Reds to join Spanish giants Barcelona in a £75m deal in the summer of 2014. Suarez was a Barcelona player until the start of last season when he was forced out by Dutchman Ronald Koeman. He scored 195 Barcelona goals before signing for Atletico Madrid in the same Spanish La Liga. The Uruguayan football legend would go on to win the league title in his first season at Atletico Madrid.
In total, Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez scored 190 goals between them for Liverpool. Suarez turned out to be the direct replacement for Torres at Anfield having moved to the club from Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam.
